Cameron opens up this weeks episode, he’s sat, fully dressed, on his bed in the flat looking at his phone, looking at his wallpaper on his phone screen, which is of his mum Bernie, he then goes ahead and picks another wallpaper, and then changes it. Getting up from his bed he heads over to his chest of drawers and picks out a set of keys.
Donna goes up to Darwin in her own clothes and gives Essie a cuddly bunny for Isla, then asks how the little girl is doing, Dom mentions about organising a baby shower on seeing the toy, and Donna says how good she is at organising them, but Essie quickly says that there is no need for that, that having Isla is enough and she doesn’t want the fuss, then she leaves to pick the little girl up from the creche.
In the kitchen of the flat, Cameron and Chloe discuss if she’s ok back to work and the topic of her going away for a bit. He then offers they keys to Bernie’s country cottage to her, saying it just sits there and it might be a nice break for her, she agrees and says she might ask Ange if she’s free to come with her, if he doesn’t mind, he does mind because something on his face said that he thought she might ask him, but he quickly replies that it’s fine.
After mixing up two women patients on AAU, Ric moves to the side of the ward to speak to Cameron who corrected him a few minutes before. The older man saying about how Darla is about to give birth and he has a lot on his mind, that he has created an opportunity for Cameron to be his eyes and ears, the younger man seems delighted at this revelation, but it seems it’s more to help an increasingly struggling Ric out than it is an opportunity for Cameron.
Essie rushes Isla back into Holby from the car park and her car seat when she vomits but it looks different to how she expects it to. After taking her up to paediatrics with Sacha, the doctors there diagnose a malrotation, this means her bowel has become twisted, that it likely didn’t form properly in the womb, that due to this she needs surgery. Essie is distressed due to how tiny she is and how much she means to her. He tells her that they need more information before they do the surgery, and Essie fakes that she’ll call the adoption agency, Sacha still being unaware that Isla isn’t actually his friends adopted child.
Back up to the ward with Sacha, Essie and Isla, he tells her they need to get the consent form signed for the little girls surgery, but she says she doesn’t have the paperwork to say that she’s Isla’s legal guardian. He tries to reassure her that because she is, or that should be he thinks she is Isla’s adoptive mum, that she has parental responsibility for the little girl and can just sign the form herself. Cracking under the pressure she dashes from the room and starts crying, Sacha follows her out and she admits to him that the agency didn’t approve her as an adoptive parent, due to the fact she’s not been in remission for her cancer long enough. She tells him she’s looking after Isla for a family member, Raf’s cousin Frankie, she admits that she’s scared that if the truth gets out she’s going to be struck off as a nurse and then she won’t be able to support Isla, that she needs him to sign the consent form. Having a moment to think about all he’s been told, he says he’ll speak to Isla’s surgeon and he’ll say that Essie isn’t in a fit state to make a decision and that way Sacha and the surgeon can consent on Isla’s behalf. You’ve gotten yourself into a mess here Essie!
Making more mistakes by the minute on AAU, the next mistake is a game changer for Ric, Cameron realises that the older man has taken a patient into the theatre for an operation they don’t need, they need antibiotics instead, Ric has ignored reports made by the radiologist and jumped to his own conclusions. Telling Xavier and Donna what’s happened and with which patient, Donna informs them where said patient is, both Xavier and Cameron rush through to where Ric is, the older man is talking to the patient in the theatre room and Cameron says he’ll handle this situation, because he’s the one who noticed it. After a brief talk to the older man, Ric turns to all the staff in the theatre and the patient herself, telling them that something has come up and they’ll have to reschedule.
Cameron makes the mistake of forgetting his wallet when being in Pulses with Darla so tells her hell head back to his flat to collect it, she tells him shell go with him for some fresh air, when they arrive at said flat Darla’s waters break and it’s left for him to take charge of the situation, that is until Ric arrives at the flat, this is after he’s been secretly up to neurology in Holby. When he arrives he’s quick to start shouting at Cameron and trying to blame him for Darla’s labour, but she tells her granddad that it isn’t the younger mans fault.
At the flat between them Cameron and Ric both attempt to help Darla give birth, Cameron getting his friend Lucy who is an obstetrician on the end of the phone to help him, Ric having at first saying he’d deliver the baby but then not long after saying he needed to step away, a similar way to how he zoned out in theatre the other week. Ric then is asked by Cameron to help just at the baby is coming, with one last push Darla delivers her baby daughter, Ric at her side.
Back at Holby, once he’d changed out of his uniform and into his own clothes, Cameron goes into the office to see Ric and tells him about his blacking out which he’s done and couple of times, plus getting muddled and mixed up, asking if he’s showing signs of dementia. Ric immediately goes on the defensive and starts shouting at Cameron and telling him he’ll only ever be junior doctor average and then senior doctor average, saying patients will never remember who Cameron is, not like they remember who Ric is, like Mrs Tan and the Tan twins, or not like they remember Bernie, rubbing salt even more in the wound by calling him Bernie Wolfe’s poor little lamb, this bringing tears to Cameron’s eyes, Ric then shouting at Cameron to get out of the office, which the younger man does, that was out of order Ric, just because he told you what you already knew but are in denial about.
Essie and Sacha talks about Isla and what to do next, Essie tells him she’s going to be the one who looks after and loves the little girl. Sacha tells her that he knows she doesn’t want Frankie to come back for her baby, Essie asks him if this would be really that bad since he knows how much it means to her to be a mum and why she couldn’t be. She says he can report her if he wants and then put Isla in the care system, to which he says it’s about doing the right thing, which Essie tells him it wouldn’t be the right thing for Isla. Sacha says he’ll talk to Isla’s surgeon about Essie’s concerns that maybe the little girl’s twisted bowel was the result of possible drug taking by Frankie when she was pregnant with her, cue a tight hug between the two of them, awww bless them both!
The last scene for this week is Chloe leaving for her break in Bernie’s cottage, she sees Cameron in the corridor as she’s leaving and asks him to come with her seen as Ange is going on a date with Fletch, Cameron follows her out to the car but doesn’t get in with her, he hugs her and then watches her leave, having told her that he’s wrung out from the day events, yeah and about being yelled at more than once by Ric. Looking on at this exchange and then Chloe driving away, is none other than yes you’ve guessed it…..Evan, he’s sat in his car a little bit away in the same car park and has a tracker on her car, that is connected to a sat nav app on his phone, tracking her every move. Waiting a few moments until she gets a bit further out of the car park, he then himself backs out of his space, and with a slight wheel skid is off in pursuit of her, I hope Chloe is ready to do battle to the death, which is what I’m guessing maniac Evan has in mind!
Hold onto you hats people, next week is going to be rather action packed and not too mention tense!!
