Holby City’s twenty first series is over, celebrating the shows’s 20th Anniversary – what a roller coaster ride it has been.

1. Return of Cameron Dunn & Arrival of Ange Goddard (Episode 1)

To kick start the series off fans were treated to not only having old faces return including Tom Campbell-Gore, we were also treated to the return of junior doctor Cameron Dunn and new consultant Ange Goddard.

2. Arrival of Chloe Goddard (Episode 5)

No longer after her mum Ange starts at Holby, Darwin welcome Chloe onto the team. But not too long until trouble hits the family. Having an abusive ex, finding out that her mum was rapped, having a half-brother working at the hospital. What else could possibly go wrong?

3. Departure of Frieda Petrenko (Episode 13)

Fan favourite Frieda was the first to leave the wards during series 21. Straight talking Frieda leaves Holby to work for an aid organisation where she can make a difference after facing an ethical dilemma following a long-running struggle.

4. Arrival of Kian Madani (Episode 17)

A few weeks after the departure of Frieda, it wasn’t long until her replacement came. New consultant on Darwin and an old medical school nemesis of Jac Naylor. His breezy, irreverent attitude to life winds Jac up but conceals his troubled history which lead to a power struggle between them.

5. Temporary exit for Henrik Hanssen (Episode 33)

The CEO of Holby City Hospital, Henrik Hanssen took a break from his duties to spend time with his family, grandson Oskar. Sacha Levy stpped up to Acting CEO in his absence.

6. Arrival of Max McGerry (Episode 42)

A new boss is in town! As Max McGerry joins Holby City as the new Acting CEO after Henrik’s extended break from the hospital.

Max ruffled a few feathers, especially on Darwin ward after putting the ward into special requirements in which should would be closely monitoring.

7. Departure of Ben ‘Lofty’ Chiltern (Episode 51)

Further towards the end of the series finale, fans were shocked to see fan favourite Ben ‘Lofty’ Chiltern leave his role as a Staff Nurse at the hospital. It’s not been a good time for Lofty, after getting married to Dominic Copeland. Lofty had an affair with a woman in which he got pregnant, during this difficult time for Lofty and Dom, the baby was a still birth.

Having their vowels renewed, didn’t go to plan as Lofty decided that they should go their separate ways.

Top 3 Storylines of Series 21

1. Sacha’s car accident & Casualty Crossover

This story begun on CASUALTY when viewers witnessed Sacha’s car turn over after having a disagreement with his daughter.

When the story continued on HOLBY CITY consultant Ric Griffin and director of nursing Adrian Fletcher found a unconscious Sacha after his accident. In the operating theatres were Jac Naylor fighting to save Sacha, while Connie was attempting to save paramedic Iain Dean who had an overdose.

Viewers found out that Ric Griffin was having a relationship with from someone within ED, which turned out to be consultant Elle Gardner.

This episode saw the crossovers of Connie Beauchamp, David Hide, Iain Dean, Gemma Dean, Rash Masum, Marty Kirby, Elle Gardner and Ruby Spark.

2. Kian’s heartbreak

It hasn’t been long since we first met Kian, but in one of the most heartbreaking episodes, he had to say goodbye to his love interest, Bea Kaminski.

We first meet Bea when she comes in for a check up after having complications with her heart. Kian and Bea start up their relationship with each other which puts Kian’s judgements at risk as he wants to do whatever he can to save her.

Jac takes the lead on Bea’s surgery, Kian assists in the surgery but things take a turn for the worst. While in recovery Bea passes away and was unable to be saved by the team on Darwin. Kian was suspended by Max McGerry as it lead to be something he did in the surgery to make Jac change her mind about which procedure to to proceed with in the surgery.

3. Ric’s brain tumour

In August, Xavier was becoming concerned over Ric’s recent behaviour. When Zav brought him up on his thought’s Ric dismissed the concerns and continued to work.

In October, Ric’s symptoms got worse, he booked himself in for scans and it came back that he had a brain tumour. Max McGerry, Consultant Neurosurgeon at St. James Hospital visited Holby to see to a former patient. Ric went to see his great granddaughter who had just been born where he then collapsed.

During his surgery, Ric was hallucinating and seeing former colleague and ex-partner Diane Lloyd who died back in 2007.

Series 21 saw guest appearances from some former cast and major guests roles in Holby City, the cast included; Jules Robertson (Jason Haynes), Denis Lawson (Tom Campbell-Gore), Sara Stewart (Arianne Cornell), Sharon D. Clarke (Lola Griffin), Jack Ryder (Evan Crowhurst), Julia Deakin (Carole Copeland), Camilla Arfwedson (Zosia Self), Luke Roberts (Joseph Byrne), Patsy Kensit (Faye Morton), Debbie Chazen (Fleur Fanshawe), Patricia Potter (Diane Lloyd), Paul Bradley (Elliot Hope) and Charlie Condou (Ben Sherwood).

Holby City Series 22 begins Tuesday 7 January 2020.
