It’s a bit of a group huddle start to the episode, Serena, Fletch, Sacha and Jac are outside, but standing down the side of the hospital all having just had a ‘meeting’ between themselves about what’s currently going on in the hospital and the fact CQC are coming in to look at AAU in the form of a spot check tomorrow.

Things between Serena and Ric are a bit frosty on AAU, him trying to find out from her if they’re ok in terms of their friendship, but she dodges the question slightly and tells him she has booked Albie’s for tomorrow night after they pass the inspection from CQC. Ric isn’t sure that AAU will pass with flying colours like she said, making his feelings known about this to her, she says to him that she knows Max is looking for a reason to get rid of her and she’ll be damned if she’s going to give her one, fighting talk Ms Campbell!

Nicky’s mum is on Darwin after being involved in an accident where she hit someone, the man will be fine but she herself doesn’t look or seem very happy, she’s annoyed with herself as Nicky tries to comfort her and tells her she can go into the staff room if she wants to stay for a little while. As they’re on their way there Tracey tells her daughter that her car insurance should have been renewed yesterday but she couldn’t get the money together to pay for it, is Tracey there to try and get money from her daughter?

Alex Dawson is back on AAU with a foot injury, asking Serena if she’d like to go for a drink at some point seen as she’s in the same vicinity as her at the moment. Their conversation is interrupted by Jason shouting at a woman patient about being rude, she made a comment about him being slow in doing his job and this causes him to get distressed and worked up, Serena steps in to calm him down.

Alex now is in a gown and bed in AAU, she’s chipped a bone in her foot not just sprained it as she first thought, and because she hit her head when she fell they’re keeping her in for observation.

Steve the guy that Tracey hit has demanded two thousand pounds to keep quiet and not say anything about her not having insurance, Nicky doesn’t tell her mum this bit and just tells her that her and Steve are sorting it between them and he’s going to get some quotes. How is she going to sort this out?

Viktor the other porter comes onto AAU and says to Serena that he’s going back to Poland, that he’s been thinking about it for some time now. He tells Serena that it wasn’t Jason’s timekeeping that was the problem, it was the lady he shouted at on AAU earlier, she made an official complaint and that caused him to lose his job.

Viktor and Jason’s other colleagues start a picketed protest just inside the main entrance of the hospital entitled ‘Justice for Jason’ after he lost his job, Sacha comes down and asks Serena if this is her doing, she says with a smile she can’t possibly say, but he smiles back knowing that it is her idea, telling her that it’s very exciting. Viktor tells Serena that none of the porters are doing any work until things have changed, that they’re going on strike.

Nicky sees Steve collapsed in his car in the car park and with Chloe’s help rushes him back onto Darwin, Chloe tells her she needs to order him a CT scan ASAP. In the operation to save Steve Chloe takes the lead and repairs the rupture that he had.

There’s a meeting in Max’s office between herself, Serena and Ric about what’s happening with the porters downstairs. Max won’t do anything to try and help the situation, she says that if Serena wants to remain as clinical lead then she’ll get all the porters back to work today. She adds that Serena has made this mess now she has to clear it up. Storming out of the office, Serena heads down to where the group of porters are takes the air horn off Viktor, then she heads outside of the main entrance and climbs on the roof of the nearby Land Rover, sitting down on it and blowing the air horn gaining the porters attention and gets them cheering and chanting. This leads to Serena being arrested and placed in a cell for the night.

Donna comes to meet her the following morning at the police station when she gets released, no further action having been taken against her. Heading into Holby to a round of applause from the porters still picketing at the entrance, Serena heads up to Max’s office where the two women talk, Ric just sitting and listening. Max says that Serena has spirit in a bit of a patronising way, Serena admits that although her intentions were good she does think she overstepped and that the porters are taking risks she can’t condone. Max says that Serena brought the hospital into disrepute and it’s a case of gross misconduct, and that they’ll give her a good reference, unless she was thinking of retiring, seeing Ric just sitting there saying nothing, this too pushes Serena over the edge and she storms out of the office and he follows her. Outside the office the two of them argue and Serena says that they’ve been friends for years and this is how it ends, leaving Ric standing in the corridor on his own, is this how they part ways?

Having just got back onto AAU Serena is called into action when Donna shouts for her from Serena’s office, as the older woman rushes there she finds Alex on the floor of said office, crutches on the floor and the younger woman crying in pain holding her injured leg. Serena quickly diagnoses compartment syndrome which is a condition and a painful one at that, when pressure within the muscles increases to dangerous levels, and says Alex needs to go into theatre straight away, the problem is that the swipe card security lock that Max had put on the office door isn’t working and Donna and Serena, plus Alex are stuck in the office unable to get out. Fearing that Alex has every chance of losing her leg if this continues, Serena makes the decision to operate there in the office with the things she has around her. Outside the office Xavier and Cameron are trying to get the door to open, Ric appears too to try and help. Just as Serena with the help of Donna manage to relieve the pressure on Alex’s leg, Serena with blood over her cerise blouse and some on the interior of the office door, the door is finally opened, Xavier, Cameron and Ric coming into help get Alex into theatre so Serena can finish the operation she’s started.

Going into Alex’s room after the operation when the CQC inspectors are being shown various paperwork by Donna, Serena goes to check on the other woman, whilst they talk Alex admits she fell and hurt her leg stumbling out of a wine bar at closing time, and that she’s not lonely, she’s just sad, also that she’s got another job lined up in Kenya, as she tries to remember that Bernie wanted them both to be happy.

Essie ends things with Ben when a rumour goes around from St James’s that he’s fathered another woman’s child, something he says is completely untrue. When speaking to Sacha about it, she says if they got together it’s only a matter of time before Ben found out the truth about Isla, and that if it’s a choice between Ben and Isla, then she wins every single time, that she’s Essie’s priority.

With all the staff in Albie’s including Max, Donna and Sacha get a video sent to their phones, it’s Serena speaking to them all on a video that’s been recorded, she’s sat in the CEO’s chair and talking directly into the camera. As she talks to them, she says about the glowing CQC report being used to attract investors, Donna asks Max if this is true, but Max doesn’t reply, instead she walks out of Albie’s.

Serena then heads out of the main entrance doors with her bag, being caught by Ric, he says she can’t go without saying goodbye, that she shouldn’t be going at all. They both talk and bury the hatchet about their earlier argument, she tells him he can’t trust Max. They both then share a hug together, as the staff from Albie’s appear in the main entrance to say goodbye to her. As she steps out of the door, she turns back to them all and says that she’ll never be so far away from the hospital that she can’t come back if she’s needed, that it’s just time for an adventure and with those parting words she strides down the ramp and then across the garden out the front of the hospital, smiling to herself as the credits roll. We’ll all miss you Serena, Holby won’t be the same without you!
